COBRA VS. CMC (Continuing Medical Coverage) 

You must choose Cobra within 60 days from you last day at work. 

You get one chance per lifetime to join CMC.  If you have 20 years or more with the company, you can start on Cobra (cheaper) and then switch to CMC after Cobra runs out (usually 18 months.)  If you get married after retirement, you can add your spouse to these medical plans. 

Under Cobra, you continue under the medical plan that you currently have.  CMC has two choices; Med 90 & Med 70.  Under Cobra, you can continue your current Dental and Vision plans.  Under CMC you can get Value Dental. 

Here are the per month costs for Gary Boyarsky as of 2010.  Prices will change yearly.  As per Jerry Cudmore, CMC rates will rise by 25% in 2011.

FLEXIBLE HEALTH SPENDING ACCOUNT 

Scenario 1

If you committed to putting, for example, $5,000.00 into the 2010 Payflex Health Spending Account and by your departure date from ABC you have only contributed a portion of that amount but you spent the entire $5,000.00; don’t worry! The company absorbs the difference.  You are not responsible to refund the company the extra money that you spent.  If you haven’t already “max’ed out” your Health Spending Account, go and do so now.  I’m sure that you need an extra pair of glasses or maybe some teeth whitening.

Scenario 2

If you committed to putting, for example, $5,000.00 into the 2010 Payflex Health Spending Account and by your departure date from ABC you have spent only a portion of the amount that you contributed, you could lose the remainder.  In order for you to spend your money which was left in the Health Spending Account, you can “COBRA” just that account, separate from any health plan.  So, you pay the premium to keep the Cobra’d Health Spending Account going and you immediately spend the remainder of your contributions and then quickly quit the Payflex Health Spending Cobra Account.

 FREE LIFE INSURANCE THROUGH DISNEY

If you retire after age 50 and have at least 5 years with the company, you get a free $10,000 life insurance policy.  If you paid for a supplemental life insurance policy, you may be entitled to a larger free life insurance policy, capped at $70,000. (80% of base pay minus $10,000 rounded up to the nearest $1,000)
